In cooperation with BORDA: Better working conditions for sanitation workers in India

Sanitation workers in India perform an important public service: they keep the city clean, collect garbage and remove waste from the sewers. They lack even basic amenities such as sanitary facilities and access to water. Many of the employees come from poorer backgrounds and often live in densely populated areas and unsanitary conditions.

We are pleased that we have been able to support a project in cooperation with BORDA to improve the working conditions of many women and men in the Chikkaballapur community in India.

As part of the project, a facility was built for the employees of the sanitation department in Chikkaballapur. In order to be able to respond to the needs of the employees in the best possible way, personal inquiries were made about the current work situation prior to construction. The implementation began in January 2023.

The facility measures around 150 square meters and offers lounges for eating and relaxing, lockers, sanitary facilities with changing rooms and laundry facilities. With this project, we are contributing to the Sustainable Development Goal 6 of the United Nations: Clean water and sanitation for all.

The concept of the facilities has been very well received by the employees and serves as a pilot project for the construction of further facilities in the state of Karnataka. This will enable even more people to have access to hygienic toilets and (drinking) water. Thanks to the project, the sanitation workers in India experience appreciation for their work and a significant improvement in their quality of life and work. We are proud to be part of it!
